Blood-donor Ann receives award for 75 donations

EIGHTIES pop singer Carol Decker has thanked an East Preston woman and other blood donors for their life-giving generosity.

Carol, former front woman for T'Pau, was speaking at an awards dinner in London for more than 100 donors, including Ann Lefley.

In a moving speech, Carol told how blood donors saved her life following the birth of her son, when it was discovered she had the condition placenta percreta.

She presented Ann with a glass bowl engraved with the National Blood Service logo in recognition of her reaching the milestone of 75 donations.

The ceremony was held at the New Connaught Rooms, Covent Garden, London, to honour 113 donors from London and the south east who had given blood at least 75 times.

Only three per cent of donors reach their 75th donation.

Miranda Lacaze, communications officer for the National Blood Service in the South East, said: "These donors are the life-blood of our service and we cannot truly thank them enough for the many years of selfless commitment they have shown by rolling up their sleeves to help save so many lives."

The service is appealing to new donors to come forward, especially as donations often drop off in the approach to Christmas and the new year.

Telephone the national helpline for more information, on 0845 7711 711.

The next local blood donor sessions will be at the Woodland Centre, Rustington, tomorrow (Friday), from 2pm-4.30pm and 5.30-8pm.
