Blue Cross cuts out the kennels

NORTHIAM’S Blue Cross animal centre hopes to find homes for even more unwanted pets by launching an innovative new scheme.

Under the scheme, Blue Cross Home Direct, pets go straight from their current home to their new family without being admitted to the centre’s kennels.

Donna Stradwick, who runs the scheme at the Northiam centre, said: “When someone has to make the difficult decision to give up a much-loved pet, the idea of them going into kennels and not knowing who they will end up can make it more upsetting.

“With Blue Cross Home Direct, cats and dogs get to stay in their relaxing home environment, until the right new owner is found for them. It’s a real benefit for animals that might get stressed or upset in a kennel environment and allows us to find happy new homes for even more animals, as we’re not limited just to the number of animals that we can fit in at our centre.

“Animals rehomed via Blue Cross Home Direct all undergo the same expert assessment and health checks as animals that come into the centre and staff take just as much care to match them up with new owners, ensuring that they are all happy and healthy in their new homes.”

When Trish Corney realised she would have to find a new home for her border terrier Ria (pictured), after she started attacking her other elderly dog, she turned to Blue Cross.

Trish explained “Making the decision to give up Ria was one that we made with very heavy hearts, but we felt it was best both for her and our other dog. We still really miss her, but rehoming her through Blue Cross Home Direct did help to make it easier.

“Blue Cross staff took great care to find out all about Ria so they could match her up with her new owners and we had complete confidence that she was going to a home that was right for her.”

“We have had updates and photos from her new family, so we know that she’s having a whale of a time – it’s nice to know she’s settled in so well.

The Blue Cross finds new homes for hundreds abandoned and unwanted of animals every year and is funded entirely on public donations. All the animals currently looking for homes on the Blue Cross Home Direct scheme can all be found on their website.
