The man suffered severe internal injuries to his chest and is still being treated in the high dependency unit at the Eastbourne District General Hospital.

The woman driving the mini cooper, who was from Middlesex, suffered minor injuries.

Police attended with the police helicopter but it was unable to land.

Two ambulances were called to the scene as were firefighters who spent more than 20 minutes cutting the man from his BMW.

Police said the accident was thought to be caused by a combination of severe wind and rain and an unlit road.
