Bognor adult learner receives John Robinson Award for outstanding achievement

Richard Rands collected this year's John Robinson Award for outstanding achievement.

He was nominated by his tutors because of his dedication in gaining both level two literacy and numeracy in one year.

His prize is a 25 book token.

Mr Rands, who works for the Sussex Autistic Trust in Bognor, enrolled on the courses because he needed the qualifications to go to university to gain a degree in social work. Before starting the degree, he wants to achieve his NVQ 2 in social care.

Peter Catchpole, West Sussex County Council's cabinet member for adults' services, said: "Not only did Richard gain both qualifications while working full-time, he also found time to support other students in the classes.

"Education is not just for children, and West Sussex has something for everyone, with a wide range of courses from flower arranging to qualification courses."

The John Robinson Award is named after a West Sussex man who worked for the BBC and had an interest in basic skills. He left a legacy to be given to an outstanding student from Bognor each year.
