Bognor chorister scores gold through her brilliant singing

Alison McCaffrey has reached the exacting standards necessary for the Royal School of Church Music's gold award.

It is the highest level of recognition given by the royal school.

She was presented with her gold medal and certificate by Father Andrew Wadsworth, the vicar of Bognor.

To qualify for the award, Hawthorn Road resident Alison (42) had to

take an exam at Sarum College in Salisbury.

This involved singing various musical items which included a piece from Handel's Messiah and the preparation of an essay on one of the chosen pieces.

She also had to pass various sight-reading and musical knowledge tests as well as preparing a layout for an evening service, which featured writing prayers and choosing suitable readings.

Alison joined the choir at St Wilfrid's in 1975 and was its head chorister as a teenager before she joined the alto

section as an adult.

Her daughter, Leanne McCaffrey (16), and her son, Daniel McCaffrey (12), also sing in the church choir.

Both gained choral awards in 2008 to make singing success a real

family affair.
