Two of the three faces of the landmark are broken, with only one currently showing the correct time.

Now money has been agreed to fix the problem

Bognor Town Councillor Jim Brooks said: “It was about three or four months ago that people were asking me ‘why isn’t it working’.

“I went to inspect the clock and found that a broken cog had stopped the hour hand on the front. I set the hands to 12 to show that it wasn’t working, and let the station supervisor and owner know.

“I have seen that an engineer has since come out, but the problem wasn’t fixed and actually another one of the clock faces has now stopped working.

“But the good news is now they are going to be fixed. I had an email yesterday (Thursday) to say money had been agreed to carry out the work.”

Cllr Brooks added: “I know that everyone has phones these days but it is important station clocks are correct.

“What if someone looks at it and misses their train by five minutes?”

One Bognor resident who will welcome the news is Chris Burstow. He said: “My grandfather helped to rebuild the railway station after the fire in 1899, he was a plumber and he did the leading around the top of the clock.

“I really want to see it brought back to fine fettle.”
