Bognor flat ablaze in town centre

Fire badly damaged a flat in Bognor Regis town centre.

The flames wrecked half the kitchen of the Canada Grove property.

The remainder of the flat was damaged by smoke. The cause of the blaze is believed to have been a chip pan in the kitchen.

A smoke alarm was fitted but had no battery.

This meant the fire was only discovered by firefighters who happened to be in the area at a separate incident around 1am on Sunday.

They noticed flames in the window of a second-floor flat.

Paramedics evacuated a neighbouring flat but there were reports of a man still inside the blazing premises.

Some 15 firefighters from Bognor and Chichester got into the premises and searched the flat to find it unoccupied.
