Bognor Girl Guide puts safety first for children

Bognor girl guide Tara Baker has raised funds for a new safety gate for charity Home-Start Arun.

The 13-year-old presented the gate to Home Arun's family group in Bognor Regis on Monday after raising funds at a car boot sale.

Tara, who is working towards the Baden-Powell Challenge, raised the money at the Ford car boot sale, having collected unwanted items to sell from her family's home, neighbours and guide company.

Parents applauded Tara for her efforts, while the children presented her with a thank-you card made during their art time in the group.

"Raising money in the current climate can be difficult for smaller charities," said Cassy Barron, family group organiser for Home-Start Arun, "so we are particularly grateful to Tara for all her hard work in providing this essential piece of equipment to keep the children at our group safe."

The charity is now recruiting for its next volunteer preparation course in the new year.

"Our volunteers are all parents themselves or have experience of bringing up children," said Bridget Richardson, senior organiser for Arun.

"They are friendly, approachable people who other parents can trust and rely on to listen without judging. They can help them regain confidence in their own abilities as parents."

All volunteers receive ongoing training and support, together with out-of-pocket travelling expenses. For more information, call Home-Start Arun on 01903 889707.
