Bognor gives thanks for serving country

About 30 veterans attended an annual service in Bognor Regis to highlight their contributions to their country.

Those who served on land, on sea and in the air were remembered during Sunday'soccasion held by Bognor Regis Town Council.

The service of celebration is intended to honour those who returned from their time in the forces and their work as civilians.

Council events officer Sue Holmes said: "It's about recognising those who served their country and what they brought back once they had finished their service.

"It is different from the remembrance service which is about remembering their colleagues who had fallen."

Sunday's service was the second to be held by the town council. It again took place in The Hub thanks to the Salvation Army.

Lt Peter Clark, of the Salvation Army, led the service and read the sermon in front of a congregation of about 100 worshippers.

The reading was by the Royal British Legion's Tony Tucker, while the prayers were read by the Rev John Gordon, of the United Reformed Church in the town.

An unaccompanied rendition of And The Band Played Waltzing Matilda by folk singer Jane Grover brought lumps to the throats of the worshippers.

Some eight standards were paraded through the congregation at the service by various organisations.
