The offenders had driven off in a Peugeot 106, which was spotted near Southlands Hospital a few minutes later.

The car failed to stop and was pursued towards Steyning and then through Sompting and Lancing before crashing into a sign in Chatsworth Road, Worthing.

It was stopped at 1.02am at the junction of Brighton Road and the High Street where some of the occupants decamped.

During the pursuit, a South East Air Support Unit helicopter, returning to its base at Shoreham Airport from a job on the Isle of Wight, assisted in locating the car and the runners.
