The number of people out of work and claiming Job Seekers Allowance (JSA) across Bognor Regis and Littlehampton has more than halved in the past five years, according to figures released by the Office for National Statistics.

The total number of local JSA claimants stood at 713 last month, representing 1.5 per cent of the ‘economically active population’ aged 16 to 64.

The figures represent a drop of 145 people over the past year and of 918 people, or 56 per cent, since 2010.

MP Nick Gibb said: “It is great to hear unemployment continues to drop across the constituency.

“A year ago, unemployment in the area stood at 1.8 per cent and now it stands at 1.5 per cent.

“These figures not only show that there are increasing numbers of people finding work, but they also represent more financial security for individuals and families who now have the stability of a regular pay packet.

“It is vital that local businesses and organisations continue to grow and create new jobs and I will do all I can to support them so that unemployment continues to fall throughout the constituency.”

The statistics also show youth unemployment has dropped in the area, with the total number of claimants aged 18-24 at 155, 40 fewer than in September 2014.
