Bognor poll: It's a resounding NO to more flats

Voters in Bognor Regis have voted overwhelmingly against more flats on the seafront.

The majority backing the idea that the current regeneration scheme has too many flats was the biggest among the four questions posed in the town's poll on Wednesday.

An almost equally large number was against closing The Esplanade as the current plans by developer St Modwen envisage. A smaller majority was against St Modwen's proposal for a live entertainment/cinema/ exhibition centre to replace the Regis Centre. A similar number of people wanted the centre to be improved along with the existing Picturedrome cinema.

Roger Nash, one of the residents behind the poll, said: "This has been the biggest vote that people have had on the regeneration and it has shown that the overwhelming majority of them are against what it is being currently proposed."

These were the questions put to Bognor Regis electors in the town poll:

1 - Do you agree that the St Modwen scheme seeks too many seafront and other flats and too few guaranteed additional leisure and shopping amenities?

YES 1,483 NO 323 Majority: 1,160

2 - Do you favour St Modwen's plan for a combined entertainment venue which will share cinema and live entertainment, to be built at an unknown cost?

YES 473 NO 1,306 Majority: 833

3 - Do you favour the alternative proposal to extend and upgrade the existing Alexandra Theatre into a modernised 520-seat venue dedicated to live entertainment, incorporated into a viable seafront regeneration, and the expansion of the existing Picturedrome cinema to four screens?

YES 1,387 NO 419 Majority: 968

4 - Do you support the closure of the seafront road, The Esplanade, as proposed in the St Modwen development?

YES 398 NO 1,396 Majority: 998

The turnout among the 16,257 electors was 1,879 or 11.55pc with about one in nine voters taking part. Spoilt and unmarked papers mean that the recorded votes do not match the turnout.
