Bognor Regis care home overjoyed at ‘good’ CQC report

A BOGNOR REGIS care home said it was thrilled at a good inspection from a care watchdog.

The Royal Bay Residential Home, in Aldwick Road, was inspected by the Care Quality Commission and passed with flying colours, after a report was issued labelling it ‘good’.

Manager Craig Powell, 30, said he was ‘over the moon’ when he found out how the home had done.

“I love working for my directors, they’re a brilliant group to work for,” he said.

“Anything you need you get and it’s just a very high-standard residential home.”

He said he had worked in care homes for a number of years, doing all sorts of jobs.

“I literally started off doing the pot washing and progressed up and up and up.”

He was effusive in his praised for Royal Bay.

“It’s by far the best I’ve worked in,” he said.

The home has 35 members of staff and can accommodate up to 42 residents.

“All our residents are extremely happy,” said Mr Powell.

Mr Powell said he had not been expecting such a good CQC report, given he had only just taken over as manager when the inspection took place, after stepping up from deputy manager.

However, the report praised everyone who worked at the home.

“People were positive about the home, staff and the care and support they received,” said the CQC.

“People were cared for by kind and caring staff.”

One of the residents told inspectors: “We are very lucky. The atmosphere is nice, we are comfy and happy.”

Out of five subcategories, the home received a ‘good’ ranking for four: safety, care, responsiveness and leadership.

The remaining category – effectiveness – was found to ‘require improvement’.

“People were supported to follow their interests and take part in activities,” said the CQC, adding: “People were supported to maintain relationships that were important to them.

“One person was assisted by the activities co-ordinator to send out Christmas cards to friends and relatives.”

Despite only just taking over, Mr Powell was praised by colleagues in the CQC report.

“Staff were positive about the appointment and the changes he had already introduced,” said the report, adding one staff member said: “He is doing very well.”

The report was full to bursting with comments from people praising the home: staff, residents and relatives.

According to the CQC, people at the home were treated with respect and there was a feeling of ‘inclusiveness’ as everyone chatted with everyone.
