Bognor Regis Fire Station open day proves popular

Five-year-old Oscar Green strapped on his yellow helmet, pulled on his black rubber boots and became a fireman for the day.

As he climbed aboard a fire engine for the first time he excitedly told his mother Kym, “I can’t wait to be a fireman.”

He said: “I have had a really good time. Being a fireman looks good. The best thing was going on the fire engine.”

His chance to ride in the machine came during the open day on Saturday (August 27).

Scores of children enjoyed the chance to ride in the cabs of the truck, and the ever-present queue was 35 deep at stages throughout the busy day.

Oscar’s mother Kym Green, 25, of Felpham Way, said: “We have both had a really good time.

“Oscar has had a lot of fun, but importantly he has learnt some important lessons.

“The display with all the fire dangers in the living room was very good. And firefighters were more than willing to answer any questions and give advice.”

Millie Hardy, aged seven, of Rose Green, said: “Getting to have a ride in a real fire engine was very exciting. But I did learn a lot of important stuff too, like not to leave things plugged in.”

The event, at the station in West Meads Drive, was jam-packed with activities like a fire engine simulator, bouncy castle, and a merry-go-round.

“I have really liked getting to see the fire station. I got to hold a fire hose like real firefighters do. The ride in the fire engine was also fun,” said eight-year-old Lilly Barnes.

The display crash scene, ‘the morning after the night before’, also showed visitors the serious realities of a firefighter’s job.

James Barker, 32, of Aldwick Road, said: “The crash scene really makes you think. To see two cars smashed up like that makes you feel sick to your stomach.

“It’s good that drivers can see just what can happen.”

Other attractions included demonstrations and displays which kept the crowds entertained.
