Bognor Regis pub gets a kick out of boots appeal

A Bognor Regis pub has been swamped by football boots as part of a charity campaign.

Sports-mad regulars of The Wheatsheaf donated more than 80 pairs of the outgrown children’s sporting equipment.

The boots have been cleaned and restored and passed on to the Youth Sport Trust for football projects in time for the start of the new football season.

Star support for the scheme, called project fair play, came when children’s TV presenter and Dancing on Ice skater Laura Hamilton donated boots.

Landlord Kevin Usher said: “Kids grow up at a rate of knots and footie boots are replaced all the time.

“Project fair play was a great way to put unwanted boots to great use.”

The idea followed the Hawthorn Road pub’s incredible 2010 campaign which collected hundreds of football shirts.

These were sent to South African townships in time for the World Cup.

To continue the link, some of this year’s boots will go to the Orlando House orphanage in Johannesburg to help its children fulfil their passion for football.
