Bognor residents encouraged to share their views about lap-dancing clubs licensing

Residents' views on tightening up licensing of lap-dancing clubs are being sought by Arun District Council.

Members of the authority's licensing and enforcement committee voted unanimously to recommend expanding its powers to have a greater say in regulating adult entertainment.

The new powers stem from latest government legislation which allows local authorities to insist on stricter guidelines on how venues are operating

Under the previous 2003 Licensing Act, laws have been open to abuse as scores of venues across the UK have taken advantage of the fact that once a general entertainment license has been obtained, there is little to prevent a club from staging regular lap or pole-dancing events.

At present there are only two clubs in the district licensed for adult entertainment, Shine and the Mud Club in Bognor.

Paul Unsworth, head of Arun's environmental health advised the licensing committee having greater influence in management of adult venues may be in both the council and public's best interest.

He said this could include the council producing its own guidelines for any adult entertainment venue.
