Bognor residents told not to waste vote

People in Bognor Regis have been told: '˜Don't lose your right to vote'.

Thousands of residents across the Arun district are being urged to return their canvass forms.

More than 30 per cent of householders have yet to add their name to the Electoral Roll, which has caused the council to spend thousands of pounds on sending out reminders.

Liz Futcher, head of democratic services at Arun, said: “Out of the 70,249 forms sent out, around 22,000 have yet to be returned.

“The response at this stage is down on 2009 which is disappointing.

“We urge those who have not returned their form to do so as soon as possible.

“This will not only save the council money, but also ensure that a canvasser does not knock on their door.”

She added: “Residents may feel they do not need to register because they haven’t moved home recently but this does not mean their details will remain on the register.

“The legislation requires them to reconfirm their details on an annual basis.”

People are also been reminded any changes to details which they have registered with council tax services will not have been made to the register of electors.

All the forms need to be completed and returned at the latest by Saturday, November 20, 2010.
