Bognor solicitor retires

A Bognor Regis solicitor is retiring from a town centre practice after nearly half a century solving legal problems.

Christopher Martin, always known as Chris, is soon to leave Chamberlain Martin solicitors. He will be 68 when he goes.

He said: "I'm looking forward to my retirement, which will include a few rounds of golf and slightly less gardening.

"In particular, I'm looking forward to relaxing at home with my wife, Margaret, and acting as grandpa to Thomas, Edward and Jessica."

Chris's lengthy association with the Sudley Road practice began in 1960 when he was articled to his father.

Reginald Martin was the original 'Martin' in the firm's name and had joined with Henry Chamberlain in 1931.

Chris qualified in 1964 and became a partner later that year. He became a senior partner on the retirement of Don Spurgeon and has been a consulting partner for the past three years.

Away from work, Middleton resident Chris has always been an active member of the community.

He joined Bognor Regis Round Table in 1960 and the town's Rotary club in 1982.

He was also a governor at Westergate Community College for some 18 years and the clerk to Middleton Parish Council for slightly longer.

His great sporting love has been golf and he became a Sussex county player in the early 1960s.
