Bognor students binge out on hard-hitting production

Scores of students in Bognor Regis and Barnham have become the first to come face to face with the results of binge drinking.

The 14 and 15-year-olds at Bognor Regis Community College and St Philip Howard Catholic High School in Barnham watched a hard- hitting production about boozing.

The schools were the first stops in a planned West Sussex tour of the Last Orders performance.

During the hour-long show, members of the Solomon Theatre Company showed how alcohol affects the way people behave and think.

It was followed by workshops which explored the issues raised. They included the link between alcohol, drugs, sexual behaviour, health problems and anti-social behaviour.

During the past year, it is estimated that about one in seven 14 and 15-year-olds will have regularly drunk alcohol. A slighly smaller number will have regularly intended to become boozed up.

About one in 20 of that age group will have ended up in hospital because of their drinking.

Cutting that toll is a key target for the Arun community alcohol liason team and the Arun crime and disorder reduction partnership members.

Arun district councillor Roger Elkins, a member of the partnership, said: "Research reveals that significant numbers of young people are drinking alcohol.

"We are keen to highlight how drinking can often get people into trouble as it impairs judgment."
