Bognor students get taste of healthy living

Differences in drinks were one of the lessons for Bognor Regis Community College pupils at a health fair.

The 245 Year 9 students spent two hours exploring all aspects of how to live safely and healthily.

Cat Moore (13) said: "I've learned about alcohol units. I didn't understand how they worked before and now I do.

"I thought it was the amount of drink in the glass which was important rather than the amount of alcohol in the drink."

Her friend, Kathryn Daws (13), stated: "It was interesting to learn how many alcohol units a day women can have compared to men. I now know it's two to three units for women and three to four for men."

Information about alcohol was just one of ten stands around the Arena Sports Centre hall visited by the students during their hour-long visit.

Other displays featured information about the importance of drinking water, sexual health, drugs, smoking and the Connexions youth programme.

Students followed the visit with a further hour of physical exercise to emphasise the need to keep fit.

They could choose between a session with a professional hip-hop dancer, a rowing machine competition or an agility and thinking exercise.

College health manager Jacquie Walker said: "It's all about ensuring young people are informed about different health issues.

"We want them to make the right choices now and as they grow into being an adult."
