Bognor weather makes hot news

GMTV featured sweltering Bognor Regis on its summer heatwave special on Wednesday, July 1.

The early-morning ITV broadcaster showed visitors and residents enjoying the seafront and beach in the scorching conditions.

A camera crew and reporter spent two-and-a-half hours in the town on Tuesday afternoon (June 30) filming the report which was broadcast at various times between 6am and 9am the next day.

They interviewed people delighted by being in Bognor in conditions hotter than many so-called hotspots abroad.

Weatherman Todd Sweeney was also interviewed at the all-important weather station run by the town council in Waterloo Square.

His readings have shown night-time temperatures reaching into the 60s in the past week.

Monday night (June 29) saw the thermometer at a sticky 17.1C/63F as a layer of cloud trapped the heat of the day. June 26 also saw a minimum temperature of 16.2C/61F.

During the days, the sun has sent the temperature soaring. The hottest day as June drew to a close was June 25 at 25.3C/77.5F. But June 24 '“ the sunniest day with 11.5 hours '“ was close behind.

That was the start of a period in which temperatures stayed above 68F.

Rain fell only once between June 23 and June 29 with just 4.1mm on June 26.
