Bognor weekly refuse collection to stay

Weekly refuse collections are to stay for Bognor Regis area residents.

Councillors made the important decision on Monday. The members of Arun District Council's cabinet were asked to study plans to bring in fortnightly waste collections in an effort to boost recycling.

But the seven cabinet members at the meeting unanimously agreed to stick to the current cycle.

This involves weekly kerbside collections of rubbish from 14,759 households around the town. Paper, plastics and cardboard for recycling is picked up on a cycle of alternate weeks with garden waste for those who pay for the latter service.

Well over a hundred councils around the country have opted to scrap weekly waste collections.

But Arun's leader, Cllr Gill Brown, said she was determined the district council would not be joining them.

"We have made it quite clear that we will not be moving from weekly collections under any circumstances," she stressed.

"I don't think we really need to go down that road. We can be proud of our very high quality service. It is certainly well appreciated by all the residents that we still keep to this weekly collection."

Cllr Robin Brown said: "The more I look at the situation the more the thought comes to me that 'If it ain't broke, don't fix it'.

"We have done very well to get where we are. When other local authorities have changed their arrangements, it becomes bad news."

Cllr Paul Dendle stated: "There's a concensus we should keep weekly collections. That's across the council members and the residents.

"The thing we have achieved with our recycling is to act without any compulsion. Other councils should learn from that. People resist when they try to compel them."
