Bognor's 'hideous eyesore' is to go at last

Vagrants living in a caravan and piles of rubbish will soon be banished from a site in Bognor Regis.

Arun District Council's development control committee has unanimously approved plans to demolish Richmond Lodge in Shripney Road.

And this will mean the caravan, rubbish, four sheds and another wooden structure will be removed.

In their place six three-bedroom and three two-bedroom houses will be built.

Last November, planning permission was given to build six two-bedroom and eight one-bedroom flats on the plot.

The plan for houses '“ covering the same area of the site '“ was put forward due to the slump in demand for flats.

Edward Rees, the applicant's agent, used the three-minute public speaking time allowed to comment on planning applications.

He said: "This site is falling into a state of disrepair and causing much frustration to residents and the council."

Cllr Jacqui Maconachie said: "I'm delighted at last that the message seems to have got through that what we want is two or three-bedroom houses.

"Let's hope they go up before they change their mind again and put up more one-bedroom ghettos."

There were reservations from Cllr Elaine Stainton: "I still think it's a bit of over-development. It's a terrible road to get out of. I think it's a little too many."

But committee vice-chairman Cllr Jean Goad had no doubts: "I welcome this one. We have lived with that hideous eyesore for too long."
