Bognor's magnificent beach reclaims its Blue Flag

Bognor Regis beach has reclaimed its place among the best in Europe.

The return of the Blue Flag means the eastern beach between the pier and Gloucester Road is once again among the elite bathing spots.

The arrival of the flag, after a year's absence, has been complemented by the town's success in gaining a Quality Coast award for the first time since the scheme began three years ago.

Ian Harding, who represents Bognor Regis Chamber of Commerce on tourism matters, welcomed the achievements.

He said: "It's really good news for Bognor. With the holiday season coming up, it will help to boost our visitor numbers and revenue for our holiday trade and shops at this time of recession.

"Congratulations to all those who have worked hard to achieve the awards."

Bognor's success has been mirrored by Littlehampton to create a unique quadruple reward for beach quality.

Norman Dingemans, in charge of Arun District Council's economic and cultural development work, said: "This is a fantastic achievement and a real boost to the area as we head into what should be one of our busiest summer seasons of recent years.

"It is a just reward for all the hard work that goes into maintaining both beaches to the highest standard."

This year will be the eighth time in all the Blue Flag has been proudly flown above Bognor promenade.

The town missed out in 2008 after summer storms the previous year polluted the seawater when it was tested. Bognor avoided a repeat last summer even though the same situation around the coast was blamed for the drop of 11 Blue Flags nationally to 71.

The flag is awarded by Encams, the charity behind the Keep Britain Tidy campaign. Beaches which qualify have to meet a wide range of criteria.

These include the provision of first-aid facilities and clean toilets as well meeting strict bathing water standards.

The Quality Coast award, also handed out by Encams, recognises beaches that are well managed to suit the needs of different visitors to reflect the diverse nature of the coastline.

Keep Britain Tidy chief executive Phil Barton said: "Holidaying in this country is the perfect way of saving money and having a great time.

"Whether it's a question of variety, accessibility or value for money, enjoying our wonderful beaches is the ideal way to recharge your batteries.

"So instead of worrying about exchange rates, baggage handlers or forgetting passports, we are urging people in England to make the most of their own magnificent coastline."
