Bognor's revamped public toilets are vandal-proof

New-look toilets are due to open in Bognor Regis town centre at the end of March.

The loos in Bedford Street are receiving a 53,500 makeover during a ten-week closure.

The busy conveniences have been stripped to a shell. All the cubicles, fittings and tiles have been removed.

The partition walls are being completely rebuilt in block work, to help to prevent vandalism, and all fixtures are being replaced with vandal-proof fittings where possible.

The toilets will also have combined handwasher and dryer units. Re-tiling and decoration will complete the refurbishment.

It is being carried out by Arun District Council which owns and operates public toilets locally. Those in Bognor are jointly funded by the town council.

Arun's councillor in charge of environmental services, Cllr Paul Wotherspoon, said: "Public facilities are very important to people using the town centre.

"These refurbishments will really enhance the appearance and usability of the facilities in Bedford Street.

"It is a sad fact that some people do not respect such facilities and abuse is common.

"But we are hopeful that the new wells and fittings will discourage vandals and serve the public better."

Cllr Jen Gillibrand, Bognor's town mayor, welcome the much-needed work on the toilets.

"Being central to the town, they are much used by residents and visitors," she added.

Temporary toilets '“ three ladies, three gents and one disabled '“ have been provided on site while the work is being carried out.
