Bogus callers target disabled pensioner

A BOGUS council worker distracted a disabled pensioner while another man burgled her home.

The burglary took place last Friday at around 4.15pm at an address in Melbourne Road, Worthing, when a man claimed to be checking water supplies and went to an upstairs bathroom.

A second person then entered through a back door and stole cash from a drawer in a back room.

The first man is described as white, medium height, heavy build, with blonde thinning hair and wearing blue scruffy jeans and a dark glove on his left hand.

Police have reiterated that they offer stickers and leaflets designed to deter unwanted callers.

A police spokesperson said: "On one side of the sticker, callers are informed that the householder will not buy, sell, enter into surveys or discussions at the door and will not employ casual workers. It also states that identification will be sought and that callers may be required to return by appointment. On the reverse side, the resident is reminded to keep all doors locked, to put the chain on before opening the door and ask for caller's ID and to check it by phone. If in doubt, keep them out."
