Bold step forward for Rustington’s brave Molly, 11

The story of disabled Molly Green, 11, touched the hearts of Gazette readers when it made the headlines, last month.

And to say ‘thanks’ for all the support she has received since the story broke, Molly took the bold decision to walk 300 steps outside her family home, in Barwick Close – a feat she had never before accomplished.

Speaking moments after Molly completed the challenge, on Friday (September 6) proud mum Nichola said: “Today has been absolutely fantastic. I just can’t believe that people have turned out to see her walk. It’s absolutely amazing.

“Molly has done fantastically. She doesn’t walk very well at all. She has got very weak muscles which is why she had the splints on.

“We’ve only done a dummy run once before. Otherwise she hasn’t walked more than about 15 steps. So 300 steps is amazing and she is so proud of herself.”

During the course of Molly’s young life, she has been rushed to hospital an astounding 65 times – on a dozen occasions she was critically ill in intensive care.

Her family hopes to raise £20,000 to provide her with a ground floor bedroom conversion and en-suite bathroom, which would dramatically improve her quality of life.

And the response by the community has been fantastic, admitted Nichola, who said the campaign has generated an impressive £3,500 so far.

Last Wednesday, staff working at HiTek Power Ltd, in Hawthorn Road, Wick, managed to add £500 to the fundraising kitty, during a charity raffle.

HiTek team member Ann Northeast, 47, of Bayford Road, Littlehampton, baked a special ‘Molly’s House’ cake to celebrate the day.

Richard May, Molly’s granddad, who is HiTek’s product manager, said: “I’m overwhelmed by the generosity of everyone. It’s really touched the entire family.”
