Heavy rain resulted in a sodden recreation ground and the Society made a contingency decision not to allow the public onto the actual field.

Further problems were caused by engineering work resulting in no trains to and from Robertsbridge,

This did not deter a huge crowd from turning out to watch the procession and fireworks.

The Robertsbridge Society led a long torch-lit procession through the streets with its hooded monks and Roman centurions.

Bonfire Societies from across Sussex turned out in force to support the event.

The effigy was of the usual high standard this year and depicted Vladimir Putin, wearing only sparkly gold trunks, brandishing a pistol and waving a Gay Pride flag with the words ‘From Russia With Love’ under it.

Robertsbridge councillor Sue Prochak said: “I would like to congratulate everyone whose hard work made the evening such a great success. The firework display was one of the best ever and really stunned the large crowd of appreciative onlookers.”

The Robertsbridge event traditionally brought the bonfire season to a close in the Rye and Battle area but if people are hungry for more bonfire they can cross the border into Hawkhurst on Saturday where the Hawkhurst Gang Bonfire Society holds its celebrations.

There is also a bonfire at Bexhill on Saturday November 29.
