Bonfire stalwart weds 50 years on from his parents

It occurred almost 50 years after the wedding of his parents in 1968.

And the pictures on both happy days were in the hands of Edward Reeves Photography.

Thirty-nine-year-old Aron’s bride at Southover Grange was Emma Lucy Rea, 31 – both of them members of Waterloo Bonfire Society since birth.

He is currently vice-chairman and Emma is a committee member. Society smugglers in their red and white hooped jerseys formed a guard of honour with torches at the ceremony.

The best man was the bridegroom’s eldest brother, Robert Penfold, and the bridesmaids were Lucy Bassett and Vicky Rea. The register was signed by witnesses Mich Lorec and Richard Osmond.

Aron and Emma, of Fitzroy Road, Lewes, held their reception at The Roebuck in Laughton, and family and friends later moved on to the East Sussex National, near Uckfield. The steel erector and the hair salon owner enjoyed a honeymoon in Edinburgh.

Almost half-a-century earlier Aron’s father, William Henry Penfold, married his mother, Marilyn Morgan, at Lewes Register Office, which was then in Fisher Street.

And a few years earlier still, Aron’s uncle Bert enjoyed a ‘gala wedding’ when he tied the knot with Lillian Sharp from Offham. It was thrown by the bridegroom’s father, Cllr W. H. Penfold.

It was a lavish affair at All Saints Church in Lewes and included an arrangement with a local shop for all children under the age of 10 to be given free ice cream cones. As soon as news spread a long queue formed outside.
