Bookworms enjoy a coffee break and some bargains

BOOKWORMS who attend a monthly coffee morning in Bexhill are reaping the benefits of bestsellers discarded by airline travellers.

The coffee mornings, held at Parkhurst Hall, Parkhurst Road, on the first Thursday of every month, are organised by Chris O’Grady.

One of the main attractions at the event, along with the socialising opportunity it provides for local folk, is the sale of quality second hand books.

Many of the books have been donated by a contact, related to one of Chris’s volunteers, who works at one of London’s busy airports.

With permission, the contact is allowed to take books left behind on aeroplanes by travellers and he hands them over to be sold at the coffee mornings. The money that is then raised from the sale of the books is donated to Bexhill Museum.

Chris and her group of volunteers, whom she describes as “my happy little band”, have been running the coffee mornings for the past five years.

With books starting at just 25p, it’s understandable why the event is so popular with local residents.

Chris, who is also a director and volunteer at Bexhill Museum, said: “A lot of people who come along to our coffee mornings buy the books, read them and then donate them back so we can re-sell them, that’s why we can sell them so cheaply.

“It’s a real social event.”

• The next coffee morning is on June 2, 10-11.30am and all are welcome.
