Boost for rec

A £200,000 revamp will transform sports facilities for youngsters at the Fort Road Recreation Ground, Newhaven.

The project, organised by the Newhaven Community Development Association and Lewes District Council, will include a skateboard park and multi-sport play area for five-a-side football, short tennis, hockey, basketball and netball.

Single Regeneration Budget funding has been granted by the South East England Development Agency and work is due to start by the end of the year.

Improvements will also be carried out at Shakespeare Hall, Fort Road, where refreshments, telephone and toilet facilities will be available for youngsters.

The Mayor Of Newhaven, Cllr Dennis Forsdike, said: 'This is a good start for what we hope will be improved sports facilities throughout the town.

'Sport is good way for people of all ages to make new friends, keep fit and have fun.'

Further plans for the Fort Road site are also in the pipeline.

NCDA chairman Pam Perry said: 'We have carried out a major survey of what recreational facilities the residents of Newhaven want for the town.

'We are currently discussing the plans for the 2 million scheme with Sports England and Lewes District Council and if approved, construction work could begin later next year.'

The cash would be used to build new changing rooms and showers, public toilets, overhaul the football pitch and possibly build a community caf .
