Booze warnings on beermats

Beermats and posters are being used around Bognor Regis pubs to warn residents about the effects of excess boozing.

The eye-catching designs are intended to make sure drinkers enjoy themselves and still survive the Christmas period.

About 40,000 beermats and 1,000 posters have been distributed to licensed premises across the Arun district to make people think twice about the effects of over-indulging.

Their message encourages people to plan at the start of an evening how they are going to get home, book a taxi in advance, avoid unprotected sex and warn of the fines they face for offensive behaviour.

It is hoped the advice will cut the toll which heavy drinking can take on individuals. Sussex Police have received more than 100 calls in the past three months regarding incidents related to alcohol throughout Arun.

The past year has seen 348 incidents of violent crime reported close to licensed premises in the area in spite of falling crime rates overall.

The number of hospital admissions due to alcohol-related conditions in Arun is also higher than the national average.

Members of the Arun Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnership of police, fire service, health and council representatives launched their Get Home Safe campaign on Mondayas the festive party season got well underway.

Partnership member Cllr Roger Elkins, in charge of the district council's community safety policies, said: "Winter, and the festive period in particular, is renowned as a key time for heightened alcohol consumption.

"Christmas parties, work dos and New Year all bring with them the excuse for people to have one festive drink too many.

"We want people to go out and have fun over Christmas, but also to take care of themselves and consider other people."
