Bosham is a great place for families and those who want to escape to the coast

Roughly two miles west of Chichester, the remarkably beautiful village of Bosham is featured in the Bayeux Tapestry and is famously where Saxon King Canute demonstrated that even royalty cannot hold back the tide.

Today, it is a popular home for both families and those choosing to escape to the coast but also attracts keen sailors like bees to a honey pot.

Stuart Hutchings, head of office at Humberts, Chichester, says: “Bosham is a very picturesque coastal village which tends to enjoy great weather.

“There is an active social scene with the sailing club, plus local shops in the village and a couple of good pubs.

“It’s very much a community, which in this day and age is becoming harder to find.”

When it comes to buying, Stuart says there is a lot of activity from people who already have a connection with the area or know of it through sailing.

Families in particular are drawn by the ‘great location’, with a good primary school on the doorstep and secondary schools just down the road.

He says there is a remarkable selection of amenities for a village of this size.

Pubs include the Anchor Bleu and the Berkeley Arms, but residents also have their pick of tea rooms, art galleries, a ‘great restaurant’ at The Millstream Hotel, plus the support of a historic and welcoming parish church, two cooperative stores, a ‘brilliant’ fish and chip shop, an off-license and a hairdresser’s.

Meanwhile, the ease of getting to and from Bosham from London is a draw for many second-home-owners: “It’s only a ten-minute walk or a couple of minutes in the car to the railway station.”

Of late, a number of properties on the market have either been waterfront or with a view of the water, but there also good quality detached family homes in the heart of the village.

As far as prices are concerned, according to Stuart prices range from small period cottages around the £500,000 mark to ‘more substantial’ detached houses.

“These are generally upwards of about £800,000 ... However, if you want to be on the waterfront, the most recent we sold was at £2.7million – a significant price jump.

“Houses with a water view tend to go for £1million to £2million in the current market, given how popular Bosham is with buyers.”
