The Tesco Express store in North Street closed as scheduled this morning for ten days for a major refit and a spokesman said: “We’d like to apologise for any inconvenience but we look forward to welcoming our customers back on November 17 to a refurbished store.”

However at 1pm today, area manager David Laight took the decision to close while work was carried out to the ceiling. “It was not a predicted closure and we apologise unreservedly to our customers,” he said.

“It was deemed for health and safety reasons that we should shut for three hours for the safety of our staff and customers.”

The store reopened at 4.30pm.

The refit includes new lighting, and reconfiguration of grocery aisles and tills and a new non-food area.

There was gridlock in the town this morning when Tesco lorries arrived to start the store’s refit.
