BOXING DAY HUNT MEETING

MORE than 100 mounted riders took over Lewes High Street on Boxing Day for the Southdown and Eridge Hunt meeting.

Before an audience of more than 1,000 people, the Huntsmen and women enjoyed a traditional stirrup cup outside the White Hart Hotel before briskly trotting through the town to the Hunt, which took place between Lewes and Falmer.

There was not a demonstrator in sight.

Hunt chairman Colin Evans said: 'As in most Hunts, we are growing in membership. The street was jam packed.

'And for the first time in 25 years, there was no sign of any protest, not even a banner. Perhaps the protesters feel the battle has been won.'

The age group of the riders ranged from four to 70.

The Hunt, once it reached the Downs with its pack of 17 pairs of fox hounds, followed a specially laid, prepared scent.

A police spokesman said there were no incidents although a horse accidentally kicked the side of a car door during the stirrup cup taking.
