Boy (14) saved in attack by gang of yobs

A Bognor Regis schoolboy was back at school this week after being attacked in the town centre.

Christopher Chubb (14) suffered concussion and a split lip when he was kicked in the head and punched during the assault.

He returned to his lessons on Tuesday, January 28,but his injuries would have been a lot worse if a good samaritan had not stepped in to stop the attackers.

Christopher's mother, Denise Chubb, said: 'This man had no reason to intervene. He got kicked and punched himself but he still walked my son home to ensure he was all right.

'I want to publicly thank him. Not enough people would be prepared to do that nowadays.

'I also want to find out if there were any other witnesses to the attack.'

She said the only way the police could catch the thugs would be on reliable evidence from witnesses. Anyone with information should contact PC Neil James, at Bognor Regis police station, on 0845 60 70 999.

It happened at around 6pm last Wednesday, January 23,outside the Premier convenience store in Linden Road.

Christopher had returned to Bognor by train from an after-school club at Chichester High School for Boys. He called into the store on his way home and his attackers struck after he came out and got back on his bicycle. Name-calling was soon followed by physical violence as Christopher was pulled off his bike by six or seven youths.

Most were aged around 17 or 18, but he thought some may have been as young as 14.

He remembers being kicked and punched in the face before he passed out. But a male passer-by came to his rescue when he saw what was happening.

He pulled the yobs off Christopher and rang 999 to alert the police. He then decided to walk injured Christopher home to Collyer Avenue when the police failed to turn up immediately.

'The man didn't want to leave Christopher outside the shop because he was worried about his safety.

'He didn't have to do that any more than he had to intervene,' said Mrs Chubb.

'But I am so glad he did because one of the attackers could have had a knife, which you hear a lot about nowadays.'

The police arrived when Christopher had returned home. He then went to St Richard's Hospital where doctors kept him in overnight to assess his condition.

He was discharged the next day with a top lip split where three of his teeth had been forced through by the punching and kicking.

The teachers at Christopher's school told him to stay at home straight after the attack to allow its effects to diminish.
