The Women’s Section of the Royal British Legion, Selsey branch, marked its anniversary with a celebration in March.

Cakes were supplied by Pam Butcher and Alan Bateman.

Fai Dade and Di Shambrook gave an excellent demonstration of flower arrangements and a cheerful change took place within about 20 minutes, after which the displays of spring creations were complete.

These were later auctioned to raising money for the charity.

However, the enjoyable afternoon was slightly marred by the news that the group will probably be closing in September.

Melva Bateman said: “The Royal British Legion Women’s Section has always worked willingly to raise money to support the ex-service and service community in times of need.

“This was done as a ‘stand alone’ body.

“The trustees of the Royal British Legion have now indicated that, due to rising administration costs, this will no longer be the case and that from October 1, the section will be under their jurisdiction.

“This will entail changes which, as yet, are not fully known and members may find they no longer feel able to accept the new constitution.

“A fall in attendance at meetings will also have a bearing on forthcoming decisions.”

The Women’s Section as a whle is celebrating it’s 95th anniversary this year.

Over the past 85 years the Selsey Women’s Section has raised many thousands of pounds for the charity, in addition to supporting the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal.

Members say they now regret the fact the new structural changes will, in all probability, bring about the necessity to close.

However, until September, they will continue to raise funds for the Royal British Legion and intend to enjoy every minute of the meetings.

The next meeting will take place on Monday, April 25, at Selsey Town Hall at 2.15pm.

Christina, a member of the lifeboat crew, will be giving a talk on the Selsey lifeboats, old and new.
