Audiences from far and wide witnessed what was claimed to be the UK’s biggest and most authentic competition of its kind, lasting for six days and featuring eight top riders, divided into four teams to represent the great political powers of mediaeval Europe – England, France, the Holy Roman Empire and Burgundy.

And, while the nation was reliving the spirit of the Olympic games during the weekend’s anniversary event in London, crowds in Arundel were celebrating England’s triumph at the mediaeval tournament.

England’s Lord Edward Stacy – better known as Stacy Evans – and team mate Mark Caple, were the victors of this year’s thrilling event, winning the top prize of £1,500.

Flo Powell, spokeswoman for Arundel Castle, said this year’s tournament was just as popular as ever, adding: “It was a really great event.

“There was a good crowd and because England won, on Sunday (July 28), everyone was excited. There was a really big cheer when the winner was announced.”

Set in 1470, the tournament was packed with action throughout the week, with three event slots each day. During the week, skills tested included, hunting and two-men jousting.
