Brave is definitely the word I would use for 13-year-old Army Cadet Dannii Ray, a year 9 student at Bay House School in Gosport.

Dannii has the most beautiful waist length hair but she is willing to have it shaved today for the Macmillan Brave the Shave at Tammys One Stop Party Shop, which is behind Rosies Kitchen on Rowner Road.

The idea came to Dannii after losing her uncle Richard Longman earlier this year to cancer. She has already lost lots of family members, including Ken and Elizabeth Woodhouse and William and Marjorie Ray.

She decided enough was enough and she wanted to do something to show her love and support to her family and loved ones.

She saw Macmillan’s Brave The Shave campaign and knew that was what she was going to do!

She messaged me asking if I could help and I was only too happy to help, as cancer has ripped its way through my family too.

Ian Ray is Dannii’s uncle and he will be by her side on the day and will be going for a razor cut.

Dannii’s mum Kim, 42, and step mum Deane, 36, are both very proud. They said: ‘We are so proud of her. A lot of girls her age would never dream of cutting their hair, never mind shaving it. She is an inspiration to us both; she has such a big heart.’

The Mayor of Gosport Keith Farr will be in attendance with his wife June.

There will be a few stalls, including Lizzie Meldrews Body Shop and Angie Bundy with Hannah’s Beads, who have already made a donation to Dannii’s Brave The Shave fundraising page at https://bravetheshave.org.uk/shavers/dannii-ray/, which is almost halfway to her target.

Dannii’s beautiful locks, once cut, will be donated to the Little Princess Trust which makes wigs for poorly children.

Tammys One Stop Party Shop is holding a coffee morning from 11am-3pm on Saturday in aid of Harbour Cancer Support in Gosport.

A magic show with Strawberry Dan takes place at the same venue on August 26 at 1pm.

Tickets are £3 and include the magic show, balloon model and candy floss. For tickets call 07801 760969.
