Brazil trip for young Ranger

A GUIDE has beaten 24 other hopefuls to win a place on a prestigious summer trip to South America.

Rowena James, 17, a member of the senior section of Sompting and North Lancing Rangers, has been selected to travel to Brazil and Argentina as part of a 19-strong group representing Girlguiding UK.

The Worthing College student fought off competition from other West Sussex candidates to secure a spot on the August expedition, which will include a stint volunteering at an orphanage alongside Argentinian girl guides.

She now needs to raise 2,800 to pay for the trip.

"I'm a bit daunted by the amount I've got to raise but I know it will be worth it," said Rowena.

"I'm really excited and looking forward to being a member of the first Girlguiding group to visit Argentina.

"Once I got through the first overnight meeting at county level, I was on to regional level and there it was confirmed that I was selected to go on an international trip."

Fund-raising

Jo Stevens, senior section adviser for Adur Valley, added: "We're really proud of Rowena.

"Girlguiding gives great opportunities for its members to travel internationally and learn more about the world.

"We're all going to support her in the fund-raising as much as we can."
