West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said flames were under control and the ten tonnes of straw in the open-sided barn was being allowed to burn out.

There is a covering jet on it and three fire engines were called to the scene, along with a command support unit.

However, a spokeswoman said the command support was turned away as it was not needed and the same was likely to be the case for the three fire engines – two from Bognor Regis and one from Chichester.

Firefighters were called at 4.11pm.
