BREAKING NEWS: Littlehampton 600-homes plan approved

BY the slimmest of margins, just one vote, the controversial Courtwick development of 600 homes and business units was approved this afternoon (Thursday, September 8).

Arun councillors voted by 8-7 to approve the scheme after a lengthy and confusing debate, including an adjournment while legal and planning officers were consulted over recommendations being put to the meeting.

After the vote was taken the meeting of Arun’s development control committee had to be adjourned again while the public gallery was cleared after objectors to the Courtwick scheme shouted their disapproval at the councillors.

In a series of votes, the committee firstly rejected the suggestion that Courtwick Lane should be used as a second access to the new estate, with two-way traffic, and then voted, by the slim margin, to approve the outline planning application.

A third vote approved a package of measures the developers, Gleesons, will have to provide for the community, including £1.2m towards the Lyminster bypass, about 170 affordable homes, more than £1m towards primary school places and a raft of other improvements.

See next week’s Littlehampton Gazette for an in-depth report on the meeting and the implications of the decision.
