The owner's bid to turn popular Chichester pub and restaurant Muchos Nachos into housing has been refused.

Chichester District Council has rejected the planning application (CC/17/01143/LBC) to convert the Whyke pub into five homes.

“Lots of people will be very happy. When someone nearly takes something away from you, you realise how important it is,” said Green Chichester city councillor Sarah Sharp, who is among many locals fighting to save the Mexican restaurant in Whyke Road.

The family who run the business said they weren’t told that the new owners of the building had submitted the plan for redevelopment until a notice appeared outside.

To potentially safeguard the future of the building as a pub, cllr Sharp has formally submitted an application for nomination as a community asset.

This would give the community the chance to have first refusal on buying Muchos Nachos if it is put up for sale.

“The decision on the nomination will be made in eight weeks’ time,” cllr Sharp said.

“From what I understand the owners bought it for between £400,000 and £450,000 and then straight away put an application for housing, so they obviously didn’t buy it to keep as a pub.

“There’s nothing stopping them from sneaking in another application for development.”
