BREAKING NEWS: Ship runs aground in Littlehampton harbour entrance

THE mouth of Littlehampton harbour was partially blocked this afternoon (Wednesday, August 17), when a cargo ship ran aground.

The MS Mungo, thought to be fully laden with gravel, is believed to have suffered a steering or propulsion failure while negotiating the aproach channel and veered off to Starboard, straddling the eastern groyne.

It happened at about 3pm, half an hour after high water, and attempts to refloat the 1,020 tonne vessel, with a crew of six on board, with the assistance of Littlehampton Harbour Board’s pilot boat Jumna were proving unsuccessful.

Also helping out at the scene were the Shoreham lifeboat, Littlehampton Coastguards and the Solent Coastguard Portsmouth sector manager. A tug was also reported to be on its way.
