A spokeswoman for West Sussex Fire and Rescue hinted that the fire was most likely accidental, but said: “Early indications are that the smoke alarm was removed from the property for decorating.”

No one was injured during the incident.

Relief crews from service are still on site this morning.

A warning has now been issued for all homeowners to check their smoke alarms and ensure they are working.
