The A259 was closed in both directions and diversions are currently in place.

A Sussex Police spokesman said: “The road closure has caused severe congestion which is likely to last into at least part of the evening rush hour, and we are advising drivers to avoid the immediate Rye and Winchelsea areas if at all possible for time being.

Drivers are thanked for their patience at this difficult time.”
