Breast is best with mums' help

Mums around Bognor Regis looking for support with breastfeeding have all the help they need on their doorstep '“ from other mums.

Both Bognor and Yapton have MILK! breastfeeding groups running. Mums who have breastfed take the lead at the groups, offering mums who are breastfeeding, or those who are considering it, realistic advice and support.

A project co-ordinator and a support worker are also present to give any professional advice which is needed.

The Bognor group meets between 11am and 1pm on Tuesdays at the Tree House Children and Family Centre, in Laburnum Grove.

The Yapton group's session takes place from 1pm until 2.30pm on Wednesdays at The Villages Children and Family Centre, Yapton Youth Centre in Main Road.

Antonia Hopkins, the breastfeeding peer support project lead for West Sussex Primary Care Trust, said the groups would enable new mums to make friends.

She commented: "It is very informal and relaxed, there is no pressure and hopefully new and expectant mums will come away having made new friends and feeling positive about breastfeeding.

"Many women want to be able to breastfeed their babies but often give up through lack of information and support.

"Breastfeeding is a skill that mothers and babies need to learn together and new mothers often need help in the early days and weeks.

"It is possible for virtually every mother to breastfeed her child with suitable help and support. Breastfeeding gives lifelong health benefits to both mother and child."
