Last Friday the beautiful Church, St Georges Brede held a myriad of beautiful flowers ready to be arranged so skilfully to interpret the titles that that everyone had been given. The Chancel was in memory of Betty and depicted the pleasure and pastimes in her life. It did bring a tear to many an eye as it was her to a ‘T’ One visitor was heard to say ‘if Betty can see from Heaven I am sure she would be pleased.’

Saturday it rained but not daunted visiting Bell ringers from Bexhill, Sedlescombe and Battle invited by Daniel from our Bell ringing team rang out a lovely quarter peel to begin the festival with a good start. As ever the British people true to form were not put off by the rain and villagers and over 200 visitors from many places came and enjoyed the displays. Some had been coming for many years and said they could not believe how much talent was in the Village and how the standard improves year on year if that was at all possible. I am one of the flower arrangers and it is so gratifying to know we give so much pleasure to so many people; it makes the enjoyable hard work so worthwhile. If you were sorry to miss the festival then you might like to know that some of it was filmed and is available on the website www.ryeandbattleobserver.co.uk and of course possibly in today’s paper. The two day Art Exhibition in the Village Hall had a good attendance and the organisers were very pleased. This is another group of very talented people who have created some stunning and beautiful artwork. The group meet on a Tuesday 3 times a month, they already have about 30 members, but if you have a burning desire to paint then a contact number is in the Village Hall. (I have been asked not to print it)

Last Sunday the sun came out, hurrah! and the number of visitors went up by another hundred more than Saturday, hopefully those who went up the tower were blessed with a most beautiful view and more people ventured across the grass at the back of the Scout Hut to visit the book tent grannies attic and the plant and jam stalls. They all felt a bit isolated in the downpour on Saturday. In the morning it was lovely sitting amongst the flowers for the service and for the Songs of Praise in the evening, which covered the many years the Church had been standing and the 33 years of the Flower Festival this being the 34th Father Martin thanked all the people who organised and arranged the flowers and all those who helped in any way around the Church and in the Scout Hut for making the event possible

Bank holiday Monday and the festival was very busy, about 98 lunches were served and the Cream teas sold out quickly. St George’s need to raise quite a lot of money for the Church upkeep and this was their main fundraiser, so lets hope it was successful for them. The Brede Giants were popular over the weekend too. Both pubs had entertainment so Brede was a good place to be last weekend.
