Brede

Rhiannon Oliver, Bellhurst Cottages

I have been asked by John May to include the following in my Village Voice column. Following the death of his wife Betty in January this year due to pulmonary fibrosis, he would like to thank most sincerely the very many friends, clubs and groups that made donations to the two nominated charities, the Air Ambulance and St. Michael’s Hospice. The total donated came to £1,630 and gives a true reflection on how appreciative people were of Betty’s friendship and the affection in which she was held by so many. The phrase “she was a lovely lady” was repeated over and over again amongst the 150 or so cards and letters that were received and John would be the first to agree with that, because she was, therefore it is fitting that this year’s Flower Festival is dedicated to Betty and Sylvia Butler as both were involved with it and the weekly Church Flowers for over 30 years.

Saturday 4 May Village Dance in the Village Hall at 7.30pm Ballroom , Latin American and Sequence Dancing

Wednesday 17 April Brede Parish Assembly had about 60 residents turn up. The evening began with Chairman Carol Kynvin thanking everyone for coming. She then introduced Inspector James Scott who spoke about policing in the area. He did mention that because of the economic climate the Police were seeing an increase in burglaries, including one in Broad Oak, therefore he urged everyone present to be more vigilant, have their possessions marked with indelible ink and make sure sheds and other outbuildings were locked. He indicated that in the future he wanted to reintroduce a unit working out of Rye. He was followed by PC Nigel Collins who spoke about policing in the Parish of Brede and some of the work done by PCSO Demy Giorgio in the 6 months he was assigned to Brede, and also that of PSCO Richard Perchard now he had returned. (NB if you are suspicious of a caller keep the chain on the door and ask them to wait, phone; family a neighbour or friend to come around quickly and stay with you while the caller is there, if it is legitimate they will wait, or if really concerned phone the Police.) Councillor Karl Maynard spoke about the Recycling system, which is to be introduced in 2014 and he mentioned the excellent incinerator in Newhaven, which is well worth a visit. After being asked about the repairing of potholes he told the audience that extra funding had been allocated on repairing and resurfacing roads in the County. The Chair gave her report and then other Parish Councillors gave their reports on Brede School, full report further on. Recreation Ground, The new benches are in place of the vandalised bus shelter. Brede Voluntary Car scheme run by the Council for residents who need any medical care and have no transport or other means of travel. If this scheme is required or if you are able to help with the scheme Contact Carol Kynvin 01424 882123 Affordable Housing is proposed to start by the Rainbow Trout in 2014, Lesley reported that Rother District Council apologised for the delay but gave thanks for patience in this matter. From the audience there was a question about the amount of homes to be built in the village, The Parish Council at this time did not have enough information to answer the question fully. Newsletter is produced 3 times a year to every household in the Parish The Editor welcomes contributions from all organisations in the village. The Playground Association has some money and aims to spend it on some more play equipment for the recreation ground before the summer. Emergency Planning is in the hands of Rother District Council. Brede Website www.brede.org.uk if you wish to know what’s going on. Speed Watch, Councillor Les Nottage requires more volunteers to train in the use of the speed cameras to make it more viable for the village at present only 3 councillors are trained and it takes that many to operate one of the devices. Thursday 2nd May Stretch and Tone 9.30am Mobile Library at Brede Village Hall 1.25pm – 1.55pm

Friday 3 May Farmers Market 10am – 12 noon, do not forget the Police will be there with the marking pen; so bicycles, computers or any other item you are able to carry can be done there. The Police are willing to come to your home

to do larger items or they can give you a pen to do your own. They will also come and do a Home Security check, let PSCO Perchard know at the Market.

Brede School thanks FOBs for giving the children such a lovely treat at the end of term egg hunt. They welcome Mrs Luff who joins Class 2 for her teaching practice this term. The school is looking beautiful thanks to the stunning corridor display based on Tom’s Midnight Garden. They also have a celebration display, “A Year in the Life of Brede” which has some lovely photos of this year’s events. Brede has been requested to take part in piloting test materials for Y6 science, so next week Year Six children will be sitting three 25 minute tests administered by a NFER representative. (Good Luck) These results will be analysed and used to inform future DFE testing arrangements. The school will benefit financially by participating but will not receive any feedback on the outcome of the tests. Pupils will be given a certificate to acknowledge their help with the development of the tests. Final numbers are yet to be confirmed for September but we are planning for the four classes to continue with Reception remaining a separate class. The school is continuing to grow with more pupils joining the school than leaving which is very good news. Funding from the new budget will be directed towards levelling the swimming pool site with a view to utilising this for additional classroom space as soon as the need arises. (The finality of the pool being removed will be upsetting to many people; as in the early 1970’s residents spent hours fundraising to put the learner pool into the school after two local children drowned, with news that only 1 in 6 children can swim this week perhaps this news will bring forth a change of hearts.) There’s a reminder that the school gate opens at 8.40am when staff come on duty. Please do not leave your children in the car park unaccompanied before this time. If your child attends an after school club, please wait for them in the playground and they will exit the building by the side door near the kitchen.
