Brede Farmer’s Market celebrates 12 year anniversary in fine style

THE weekly Farmers’ Market at Brede Village Hall has clocked up 12 years.

The market was one of the first weekly farmer’s markets in Sussex and has gone from strength to strength becoming a village institution.

Resident Liz Stephens, who helped start the market, said: “What started as an experiment that would hopefully last for six months has surprised everybody with its success.

“ We try to keep to the guidelines stated by The National Farmers’ Market Association whereby produce comes from within a radius of 15 miles and is grown, baked, brewed, harvested, reared etc. by the stall holder, but we do bend the rules sometimes if a sensible case can be made. There is a misconception that Farmers’ Markets are expensive. Not so, our prices often come in below or on a par with supermarket prices.

“We have pork and free range eggs from Winchelsea Beach, lamb from Sedlescombe, beef from Peasmarsh and smoked, wild game from Northiam. Milk, (including raw milk) yoghurt and cream from Westfield, fruit and vegetables from farms in Icklesham, Iden and Bodiam. Fish is landed at Rye Harbour and sold at the Market.

“A new stall, which has proved very popular, sells gluten-wheat-and-dairy free cakes which even if you do not have an allergy are very moreish! This stall complements the bread from Rye along with home-made quiches and savouries from Broad Oak.

“You can buy spices and oils blended in Westfield, apple juice from Brede. Jams and preserves are made in Rolvenden. Seasonal plants are available all year.

“On the craft side you can buy handmade soap, greetings cards and decorated glass. Your furniture can also be re-upholstered or restored.

“The second hand book stall on alternate weeks helps to supply the many Book Groups in the village.

“Tea, coffee and hot chocolate are available. The proceeds, which total over £13,000 so far, go to local charities.”
